Hon’ble guests, worthy colleagues and dear students; it is a matter of proud privilege for me to present the 31st Annual Report of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies for the year 2017-18.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our esteemed guests The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi Sh. Arvind Kejriwal Ji, Sh. Manish Sisodia Ji, Deputy Chief Minister Delhi, Sh. Satyender Jain Ji, Minister PWD, Sh. Mohinder Pal, MLA Rohini, Sh. Devender Singh, Sectretary Higher Education GNCTD, Sh. J.P. Agarwal, Director, Higher Education, GNCTD, Sh. R.R. Pathania, Chairman Governing Body  and Sh. Praveen Gupta, Treasurer Governing Body, SSCBS) on this day.

Sh. Arvind Kejriwal is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and has worked in the Indian Revenue Service as a Joint Commissioner of the Income Tax Department in New Delhi. In 2006, Sh. Kejriwal was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership recognising his involvement in the grassroots movement Parivartan using right to information legislation in a campaign against corruption. The same year, after resigning from the IRS, he donated his Magsaysay award money as a corpus fund to form the Public Cause Research Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

In 2012, he launched the Aam Aadmi Party, and the party won in the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections in 2013.

On 14 February 2015, he was sworn in as Chief Minister for a second term after his party’s victory in the Delhi Legislative Assemblyelection.

In December 1999, while still in service with the Income Tax Department, Sh. Kejriwal, Sh. Manish Sisodia and others found a movement named Parivartan (which means “change”). Parivartan addressed citizens’ grievances related to Public Distribution System (PDS), public works, social welfare schemes, income tax and electricity.  Parivartan used RTI to help people get their work done in government departments without paying a bribe. Along with other social activists like Anna HazareAruna Roy and Shekhar Singh, Kejriwal came to be recognised as an important contributor to the campaign for a national-level Right to Information Act

Later, in 2005, Sh. Kejriwal and Sh. Manish Sisodia launched Kabir, a registered NGO named after the medieval philosopher Kabir. Like Parivartan, Kabir was also focused on RTI and participatory governance.

In December 2006, Sh. Kejriwal established the Public Cause Research Foundation in December 2006, together with Sh. Manish Sisodia  and Sh. Abhinandan Sekhri. He donated his Ramon Magsaysay Award prize money as a seed fund.

In 2011, Sh. Kejriwal joined several other activists, including Sh. Anna Hazare and Dr. Kiran Bedi, to form the India Against Corruption (IAC) group. The IAC demanded enactment of the Jan Lokpal Bill, which would result in a strong ombudsman. The campaign evolved into the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement.

Sh. Kejriwal’s views on corruption and the state of the Indian democracy are expressed in his book Swaraj. He advocates for a decentralization of government and the involvement of the panchayat in local decisions and budgets. He claims that foreign multinational corporations have too much power in the central government and the politicians at the centre are not being held accountable for their actions after their election. He has a number of awards to his credit. He was awarded a grant and fellowship by the Association for India’s Development. Policy Change Agent of the Year, Economic Times Awards, NDTV Indian of the Year, CNN-IBN Indian of the Year to name a few.

Later, he became an active participant in the popular movement of 2011 that sought a Jan Lokpal bill. He was involved in drafting the first version of that proposed legislation. Following the creation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in late 2012, Sisodia became a member of its Political Affairs Committee. PLACEMENT CELL (CDC)

Career Development Centre (CDC), the Placement Cell of the college, serves as an interface between the students and the recruiters, offering a host of services in the areas of placements, internships, live projects, personal counselling and support, assistance in resume building and soft skills development. Lectures and sessions with industry practitioners and regular industry interaction via industry visits, pre-placement talks, workshops and compulsory summer internships for the second year students help bring the academic and the corporate world closer for them. All of these help students to achieve well- rounded growth and a balanced perspective towards academic knowledge and corporate- ready skills.

CDC has access to fully-air- conditioned dedicated meeting-cum-interview rooms, training and lecture rooms with world-class AV facilities for holding guest lectures and pre-placement talks, a lounge for visiting HR and corporate professionals, dedicated office space for the Placement Officer and the student team and 25-30 seater conference room. This has enabled our students to have a greater understanding of the corporate world that they would eventually go out and inhabit, hopefully, with a great degree of success.

Final Placements

The companies visiting the campus are from as many as fifteen sectors, including consulting, insurance, knowledge services, real estate, media, investment banking, PR, IT, shipping, and financial services. Students are offered a diverse mix of profiles that include strategic consulting associate, business analyst, equity and other research oriented positions to name a few.

Students of SSCBS have also done well in academic endeavours such as qualifying the CAT (Common Admission Test for admission in PG Programs in Management at IIMs and elsewhere) and successfully converting opportunities in prestigious institutions for higher studies. Notably, Bani Singh (IIM-A, with offer from ISB), Kamna Mittal (IIM-L, with offers from XLRI and MDI), Mahima Rastogi (IIM-A), Pavitra Garg (IIM-A), Sahil Gupta (IIM-A), Sarthak Goswami (IIM-C) and Aarushi Verma (XLRI) among others have done the college proud this year.

The Placement Season 2017-18 started in August 2017 and has seen 151 offers for more than 180 registered students from coveted recruiters like Bain Capability Centre, DE Shaw, McKinsey Knowledge Centre, AT Kearney, The Boston Consulting Group, EY, KPMG, CBRE, etc. The largest recruiter was KPMG with 18 offers. DE Shaw has offered the highest package with a compensation of INR 17.0 LPA. The average package stands at INR 6.4 LPA. 83.3% of the students who had registered for placement support from the college have been placed in the corporate sector till 31 May 2018.

Summer Internships

The summer internships are an essential component of the BMS and BBA(FIA) courses and the college lays great emphasis on them and encourages the students to gain corporate exposure and learning, helping to enrich the theoretical classroom learning of the students.

Summer internships have been undertaken at leading companies like BCG, EY, KPMG, PwC, CBRE, Deloitte, Ogilvy and Mather, M&C Saatchi, American Express, Aon Hewitt, Alamak, B9 Beverages, Inshorts, Teach for India, Nearbuy, Sberbank, Willis Towers Watson and others.

In 2017 – 18, companies such as Knight Frank and Willis Towers Watson among others especially came to the college for recruiting interns.

In order to encourage students further, the college recognises the top 3 internship project reports each year. This year, the following students are being recognised for their internship activities:

  1. Harshit Gupta (Interned at Fitch Ratings)
  2. Ishpreet Kaur (Interned at Jindal Saw Limited)
  3. Niharika Nangia (Interned at Anplify Services Private Limited)

Value-added Courses

In addition to the curriculum, the college has taken initiatives for enhancing the employability, presentation and communication skills of the students. Numerous talks, lectures and interactions have been organized to help the students develop a better understanding of the business world and entrepreneurship-related concepts. The resource persons for these special lectures have been drawn from various professional/business institutions and the alumni of the college help hone the skills of the students. This year, Nikhil Chainani, an alumnus of the college, visited the campus to interact with students. Many such interactions are planned for the coming academic year.

SP Jain Global in collaboration with CDC conducted the Advance Student Admission Programme (ASAP) in college through which two of our students Mukund Makkar and Prateek Arora got the opportunity to travel to Singapore for industrial training and interaction.

Alumni Activities

Our Alumni are an important part of the SSCBS family. They are our brand ambassadors, our alter ego, our connect with the corporate world and a reflection on SSCBS as an institution.

It is with, perhaps, a bit of justifiable pride that we look at our alumni and feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when we see the amazing levels of success that they have achieved after leaving the college.

Their success is not only visible in the corporate and/or academic spheres, but in the visibility of the country as a whole. In order to connect better with our alumni and to foster their continued association with the college, the college regularly conducts alumni meets.

The alumni association (CBSAA) serves as a ground for regular alumni-student interaction and training and learning interactions with our alumni.

The efforts of the CDC faculty coordinators is highly appreciated.
